Travel insurance: 'Price matters more' than environment

Tuesday, 04 March 2008

Tourists are worried more about price than environmental issues when they decide on their breaks, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).

While people are in some cases concerned about the environment the main driver impacting on them is what they will be charged, the organisation claimed.

However, said spokesman at the ABTA Sean Tipton, the industry has always been aware of the damage it could be doing and it is in its interests financially to look after its main resorts and destinations.

"Sustainable tourism for the environment, is sustainable tourism for us. It means helping the local economy as well as minimising damage to the environment," he commented.

He added that holiday firms also want to rectify some of the errors seen in the past and make steps to aid local communities in the future.

Research carried out by TNS Online Omnibus revealed that 65 per cent of holidaymakers would keep their existing plans despite the threat of environmental impact.

People about to embark on holidays should ensure that they have adequate travel insurance plans.
