Home Insurance customers should take steps to protect their properties this Halloween, Greater Manchester Police has warned, as there is an increased risk to home insurance during this season.

As dark afternoons and evenings give criminals the benefit of added cover, it is important not to make things easy for them by leaving doors and windows unlocked.

Savvy householders can protect their home insurance even further by leaving lights on a timer switch or using a low-energy light bulb during the daytime, according to Chief Superintendent Russ Jackson of Greater Manchester Police.

"Burglary is a distressing crime that deprives victims of valued possessions and can leave them feeling frightened and vulnerable in their own homes," he commented.

According to official police figures, incidents of burglary went down by 21 per cent within the Metropolitan Division of Manchester between April 1st and October 20th, although this should not be a reason for people to let their guards down.
