Car insurance: Protecting a no-claims bonus 'is a good idea'

Saturday, 04 July 2009

Motorists should seriously consider protecting the no-claims bonus on their car insurance policy, it has been suggested.

According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association, doing so can have a significant effect on the cost of cover in the event of an accident.

Technical services manager Steve Foulsham stated: "Some companies will charge a little bit more at the outset to have that protected bonus, but the advantages if you have to claim far outweigh the cost that is there initially."

He acknowledged it can be tempting for people to cut corners on insurance when times are tight, but added people need to take into consideration the kind of service they will get if they are involved in a collision.

Figures from Directgov have shown 6.5 per cent of motorists in the UK get behind the wheel without any kind of protection.

Meanwhile, drivers looking to buy a car insurance policy that allows them to ensure they do not lose their no-claims bonus may find they can secure a competitive deal online.
