It is more probable for drivers to gain cheap car insurance if their response times are better, which will reduce the chances of an accident.

With this in mind, a team of scientists in Germany is pioneering a system that will make the car come to a stop purely by using the driver's thoughts.

It is hoped that a mind-reading device that is attached to the vehicle and the driver could stop the car a few milliseconds before the signals are sent to the foot on the brake pedal.

Stefan Haufe from the Berlin Institute of Technology believes plugging into the driver's thoughts could help to speed up response times.

According to the study published in the Journal of Neural Engineering, the team is now considering using the system in a real car.

However, they admit it will be a considerable amount of time before it is commercially available to motor insurance customers.
