Motor insurance: Speed limit changes 'should be cautious'

Wednesday, 11 June 2008

Proposals to change the speed limit in some areas to 20 mph should be looked at in depth before they are implemented, it has been suggested, something that could impact on motor insurance.

Research development manager for the Royal Automobile Club Foundation Elizabeth Dainton said that speed is not the only factor apparent in accidents.

Other elements including the actions of drivers come into play and can lead to incidents on the roads, she asserted.

"It does not follow that 20 mph zones should be implemented in residential areas without adequate consideration being given to local circumstances and public opinion," she commented.

She added that one solution for all problems will probably not be effective and that further driver training could be a more important measure.

A complete network of 20 mph zones, she argued, would not be "desirable".

This week, Swiftcover suggested that women drivers may be being targeted by insurance firms who are raising their deals.
