Motor insurance: Record number to lose driving licence in 2007
Friday, 05 January 2007
A record number of drivers are expected to lose their licence in 2007 by breaking the law and racking up penalty points.
This is the conclusion of new research by Car Parts Direct, which found that 86 per cent of drivers admit to breaking the law while on the road.
Speeding, ignoring traffic signs, failing to stop at red lights and using mobile phones while driving were found to be the most common laws broken.
Figures from the Home Office reveal that a record 13.5 million penalty points were added to licences last year, leading to the disqualification of 221,400 drivers.
But Car Parts Direct expects this number rise significantly higher in 2007 as new mobile phone laws and improved speed camera technology catch out more unlawful drivers.
Mark Cornwall from the company said: "It really is easy for even the most law abiding motorists to slip over a speed limit – a simple unintentional mistake can leave a motorist without a licence."
But it is not just being issued with a driving ban that motorists need to worry about. Acquiring license points can also lead to significant hikes in motor insurance premiums which can send the overall cost of motoring soaring.
