Motor insurance: 'Refunds for drivers billed in error'

Wednesday, 09 January 2008

Drivers in Lancashire are likely to be refunded after they were charged for awareness courses in error, it has been revealed.

Now Lancashire Police will have to give the money back to the motorists after they were the victims of speed cameras set up as a mistake, reports This is Lancashire.

In total, 59 drivers were hit by the charge for a course instead of penalty points being put onto their licences.

The independent police complaints commission and local officials have both refused to confirm the area in which the faulty cameras where placed, after hundreds of speeding fines were also given out by mistake.

Hyndburn's Labour MP Greg Pope stated that something should be done so that this type of problem does not occur again.

"This is a real mess. It's not just the cost of going to the speed awareness course, but getting time off work and travel costs ... this should really focus people's minds to get these things right in the first place," he told the paper.

Earlier this week it was reported that a speed camera near Oxford was attacked by a vandal and set on fire.

Motorists caught speeding may find that their car insurance premiums are impacted upon.
