Travel insurance: Regional airports 'likely to grow'

Wednesday, 07 May 2008

It is likely that regional airports in the UK will see growth in the coming years, it has been claimed.

Commercial and aviation development director at Leeds Bradford International Airport Tony Hallwood stated that as these venues offer a greater portfolio for travellers, they will become more popular.

And the destinations on the agenda from these regional locations are able to compete more now with those offered by bigger airports, he noted, such as trips to Europe.

Moreover, additional services in these regions, such as a possibility of direct flights to New York from Yorkshire, could see these trends develop further, Mr Hallwood added.

People will gradually rely on London airports less, he asserted, as connections will be available to more worldwide destinations.

"As [regional] airports introduce more destinations and more choice with a wider number of scheduled airlines, there is now less need for people to trawl down to London to connect to flights worldwide," Mr Hallwood commented.

In 2007, a total of 241 people passed through airports in the UK, a figure up by 2.4 per cent on the year before.

Travellers should ensure that they have adequate travel insurance before embarking on journeys away.
