Travel insurance: Holidaymakers urged to ask questions

Monday, 09 February 2009

Holidaymakers keen to ensure they only take out travel insurance for ethically sound trips should ask plenty of questions before booking a getaway, it has been claimed.

According to, people need to start thinking about the environmental and social impact of any break they take.

Communications manager Krissy Roe said individuals should "ask the tour operator, ask the travel agents [and] if [you] are travelling independently, ask the hotels about their responsible tourism policies".

She added there is currently an "unmet demand" from people for more information on the potential impact of their holidays.

Meanwhile, research from Good Business recently revealed 72 per cent of those questioned did not think travel companies were doing as much as they should to address environmental and social issues.

The study also showed 76 per cent of people did not think they were given enough information to make informed choices about responsible holidays.

Some 53 per cent of participants thought it was more important for holiday companies to address social issues, while 47 per cent stated environmental concerns should be prioritised.
