Car insurance: Potholes 'on the rise'

Sunday, 03 May 2009

The amount of potholes is on the rise and this could mean car insurance policyholders need to be more careful on the road.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), these hazards have increased by a third and can have damaging consequences to vehicles.

However, drivers can take certain precautions to avoid accidents and collisions. Be careful of cyclists and give them a wide berth as they may be swerving to avoid a dip, said the organisation's chief examiner Peter Rodger.

"If you do hit a pothole accidentally, make a point of checking not just the outer tyre wall but the inner tyre wall, which may have been damaged as a result," he added.

It was also recommended that motorists report potholes they encounter to the local authority.

Car insurance may cover accidental damage caused by a pothole but it might be wise to double-check the small print of your policy to make sure protection is adequate.
