Car insurance: Government criticised over road pricing
Wednesday, 17 October 2007
A national road pricing scheme, which could see the cost of motoring increase for car insurance customers, is a "logical" way of reducing congestion, according to the Liberal Democrats.
Responding to reports that the government may be abandoning plans to introduce such a system, Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson Susan Kramer said that it had "lost its nerve".
"Local pricing schemes will actually end up costing the motorist more, whereas national road pricing would be offset by cuts in fuel duty and VED [vehicle excise duty]," Ms Kramer claimed.
Introducing a system of road user pricing would help to address the problem of congestion and tackle climate change, she added.
However, Peter Roberts, who posted a petition on the Downing Street website calling for the proposals to be scrapped, told the Daily Telegraph that the government had "listened to the voice of the people".
