Car insurance: Special constabulary to make roads safer

Wednesday, 03 February 2010

Car insurance claims in Suffolk are likely to be reduced this weekend as members of the special constabulary join their regular colleagues to help make the county's roads safer.

The two-day event is part of National Specials Weekend, an annual event where thousands of volunteer officers across the country take part in dedicated patrols and operations based around a particular crime reduction issue, with this year's theme being 'roads policing'.

Around 150 members of Suffolk's special constabulary will join officers and staff from the roads policing unit, neighbourhood response teams and safer neighbourhood teams (SNTs).

Together, they will carry out road safety enforcement checks, focusing on speeding, use of mobile phones, driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs or without car insurance and seatbelt use.

"Some communities have highlighted to their SNTs concerns about anti-social vehicle use or parking problems," said special superintendent Dean Knight.

"Specials will be focusing on these issues to improve quality of life for people living in affected areas."

More drivers are using hand-held mobile phones now than two years ago despite tougher penalties being introduced, according to the Transport Research Laboratory.
