Car insurance premiums could be at risk this winter after a local authority warned that spending cuts could mean roads are not properly gritted.
Warwickshire County Council has 14,000 tonnes of salt on order for this winter, but said it may not be enough and the next three or four years could also see roads under-gritted.
Chief executive of the council Jim Graham told BBC News: "There's a spending review in the autumn and clearly transport budgets will be one of the ones under scrutiny by government.
"We've got about 4,500 miles of roads to that we have to grit."
Road salt levels fell dangerously low during last winter, which saw particularly nasty weather for
car insurance customers as roads became icy and then cracked, causing potholes, during the thaw.
A report commissioned by Whitehall advised the government to import 250,000 tonnes of road salt to prepare for the coming winter.
