Car insurance: Roundabout plans rejected

Monday, 10 March 2008

Proposals that could improve the safety of the roads in one area of Hampshire have been thrown out by the local council.

Hampshire county council rejected plans to create a roundabout in Whitchurch at the junction of Winchester Road and Micheldever Road, reports the Bazingstoke Gazette.

Councillors claimed that such a measure would only work if there are "well-balanced flows", something that is not the case in this location.

"Under these circumstances, this wouldn't have the calming effect that is expected and could be potentially hazardous," an email from the highways officers at the council read.

But Keith Watts, Whitchurch borough councillor, said that drivers are not keeping to the speed limit and that a roundabout could solve the situation.

Drivers caught breaking the law may find that their car insurance premiums are negatively impacted upon.

In related news, campaigners at Southbourne parish council claimed that a new housing development could alter the safety of a local road, the Drive, but that it will still go ahead, the Chichester Observer reported.
