Car insurance: 'Drivers should conduct routine checks'

Monday, 12 January 2009

Motorists who do not want to end up relying on their car insurance breakdown cover may benefit from conducting regular basic vehicle checks, it has been claimed.

Haynes Publishing stated it is not always enough to depend on servicing appointments to identify potential problems.

It suggested drivers start conducting their own simple maintenance between trips to the garage.

"Carrying out such checks will help avoid unwelcome bills and minimise the expense or the inconvenience of a breakdown," the producer of vehicle manuals added.

The company also claimed drivers do not need any specialist knowledge to conduct routine tasks, as long as they thoroughly research what they are doing.

It said motorists should not be misled into believing that cars on the road today are too complicated for owners to be working on.

Meanwhile, Haynes Publishing recently advised drivers keen to avoid a motor insurance claim to check their tyre pressure on a regular basis.
