A new sat nav system could save drivers from future rises in the cost of car insurance cover, as it warns them of the potential fines they face should they break the speed limit.

The Econav calculates the exact amount one would expect to pay in penalty fines for speeding, in addition to the points that would be added to their licence, which would push up the cost of car insurance cover.

Also, the system tells the driver any extra administrative costs they will have to pay.

David Elder, UK country manager for Econav, told the Daily Telegraph that the Less Points, Less Fines technology will be of great benefit to many drivers who break the speed limit unknowingly.

"Most drivers are vulnerable to speeding penalties at some point, whether it's through lack of concentration, unclear road signs or unfamiliarality with the road," he added.

The system costs GBP149.99, although those who own the original model can download the new technology free of charge.
