Travel insurance: Rail strikes in Scotland 'will go ahead'
Saturday, 10 April 2010
Talks to avert strike action from Scottish rail workers have fallen through, it has been reported.
Anyone travelling with ScotRail from April 12th should check the conditions of their travel insurance policy to find out whether any additional expenses or the cost of hotels will be covered by the travel insurance provider.
Three strikes by Scottish workers have already taken place and the RMT union and First ScotRail had hoped to reach an agreement this week to resolve the dispute.
Acas, the conciliation service, met with the union and rail company to settle the disagreement, which began after plans were announced not to employ conductors on ScotRail's new Airdrie to Bathgate line.
If the rail strikes take place in Scotland, anyone missing a flight due to this could find their travel insurance policy will not actually compensate them.
A study from Which? Holiday found that half of travel insurance providers would not pay out if a holidaymaker missed a flight due to road traffic but they would consider paying out if public transport delayed the passenger, however, this would probably not happen in the case of scheduled strike action.
