Motorists have been warned to "take it easy" in snowy conditions in order to avoid accidents and subsequent car insurance claims.

People should avoid travelling unless it is "completely necessary", while ensuring that they do not ignore police warnings or advice to not travel on specific routes, according to a representative from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

Peter Rodger, chief examiner at the IAM, also told people to consider working remotely if it is possible.

Mr Rodger has advised people on the road to ensure that any snow is cleared from the vehicle.

As well as this, motorists need to start the car gently without completing too many revs and then keep to the right speed to prevent themselves having to brake.

Mr Rodger has also suggested planning a journey around busier roads because these are more likely to stay open when snow and ice affects more rural routes.
