Car insurance: Scottish drink driving levels 'appalling'
Tuesday, 15 August 2006
Drink driving levels in Tayside, Scotland have increased significantly, according to new police figures.
Officers in the region have revealed that a fortnight-long campaign saw 46 drivers give a positive breath test – an 81 per cent increased compared to levels in 2005.
The majority of offenders were male and aged between 26 to 55 years and police have raised concerns that too many motorists are ignoring campaigns aimed at highlighting the substantial risks of driving under the influence.
Chief inspector Sandy Bowman said: "I am totally appalled by these figures and cannot believe there are still so many stupid and selfish individuals out there."
He added: "During this campaign too many drivers have chosen to ignore the Don't Risk It message and will now face court proceedings, lose their licence, and receive a fine."
Any motorists caught drink driving could be required to inform their car insurance providers if they receive additional licence points or receive a temporary ban from driving and this is likely to mean increased motor insurance premiums in the long term.
