Car insurance: Scrappage scheme 'not for everyone'

Sunday, 24 May 2009

Motorists who have started getting car insurance quotes because they are planning to take part in the scrappage scheme should not assume they are going to get a good deal on a new vehicle, it has been claimed.

Which? Car said there are great offers available, but it depends on the kind of model people are looking for.

The consumer guide stated the individuals who will benefit most from the programme will be those buying small vehicles, as they can expect to receive a financial incentive of at least 20 per cent.

However, editor Richard Headland advised: "On more expensive cars, shop around for a bigger scrappage discount or check if buying second-hand is cheaper."

According to Which? Car, the best deal currently available under the cash for bangers scheme is on the Kia Picanto, which participants can drive away in for £4,195.

People who purchase this model may find they can save even more money by searching for low cost motor insurance online.
