Car insurance: Almost 75% want the scrappage scheme to continue

Wednesday, 07 April 2010

The government-funded scrappage scheme has proved popular with car insurance customers in recent months, with almost three-quarters of Brits wanting it to continue, a survey has revealed.

Some 72 per cent of those surveyed by online car retailer Carmony.co.uk, said that they liked the scheme and understood the principles of it.

However, less than ten per cent of people questioned had actually taken advantage of the initiative, which could explain why they wanted it to continue.

More than half thought the scheme, which finished at the end of last month and offered buyers £2,000 off the cost of a new car, was successful and had encouraged people to buy cars despite the recession.

"It's interesting to see just how popular the scrappage scheme appears to have been with the car buying public," said Alan Hazelhurst, managing director of Carmony.co.uk.

When purchasing a new car, buyers should check the terms and conditions of their current car insurance policy to ensure it covers any additional specifications on their new car.

The scrappage scheme was implemented by the government last May to provide a short-term boost to new car sales, which were flagging as a result of the economic downturn.

It proved to be highly successful, with almost 400,000 old cars traded in for new, more eco-friendly models.
