Seat belts are vital for safety

Tuesday, 07 February 2012

It has long been the law in the UK that anyone travelling in a car must wear a seatbelt to ensure that they remain safe when they are out on the road.

However, many people still do not wear the safety devices, and road charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has urged car insurance customers not only to wear their own, but also challenge family and friends who do not.

It said that 19 per cent of people in the back seat of a car never wear a seat belt, while nine per cent of drivers admit to going without.

IAM director of policy Neil Greig said: "Research shows that one in five occupants killed in crashes were not wearing seatbelts. That's more than 300 preventable deaths a year."

Vigilance with road safety will be vitally important this week, with the Met Office predicting that the cold snap currently affecting the country could last a whole week.
