Car insurance: Free screws could help cut vehicle plate thefts

Wednesday, 10 December 2008

An initiative by the Wycombe Community Safety Partnership and a local garage could see car insurance claims in the town fall.

Downley Garage has agreed to fit security screws to its customers' licence plates for free during routine services or MOT checks.

Inspector Russ Murden from the Wycombe neighbourhood team explained stolen registration plates are often used in further criminal activity - such as thefts of fuel and parking offences.

He said this could end up being extremely problematic for the legitimate owners.

Inspector Murden added: "The screws will prevent plates from being stolen and will hopefully act as a deterrent too."

Other garages are being encouraged to follow the example set by Downley Garage and sign up for the scheme.

Meanwhile, the Safer Communities Partnership in West Oxfordshire could also help to cut motor insurance claims in the run-up to Christmas with a roadshow encouraging drivers not to leave valuables on show in their vehicles.
