Winter sports junkies like avid skiers and snowboarders could save money this winter if they choose less well-known resorts, but shouldn't scrimp on their travel insurance policy.

That's according to industry experts who advise jetting off to resorts like Chevalier in France or Red Mountain in Canada because they're less popular.

"They're the perfect choice for anybody looking for something a little different or restricted by a tight budget," an insurance expert says.

Travel insurance policies don't usually cover winter sports as standard, so it's essential that holidaymakers check what's included before hitting the slopes.

Extra medical cover in particular is "crucial for skiers and snowboarders, who have a higher risk of accident than standard tourists", it's claimed.

Travellers have also been warned this week not to assume the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will cover them for winter sports.

If you love the adrenaline rush of the winter holiday season, swiftcover.com offer winter sports as an optional extra to your travel insurance, from skiing and snowboarding, to tobogganing and whizzing around in a snow mobile.ADNFCR-3010-ID-19560253-ADNFCR
