New car sales have increased for the tenth consecutive month, new figures have shown.
According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 148,793 new vehicles were purchased last month, marking a rise of 11.5 per cent compared with the same period in April 2009.
Small vehicles with lower
car insurance costs such as the Ford Fiesta proved very popular with motorists, with the Fiesta, Vauxhall Astra and the Ford Focus the three top-selling models.
The SMMT said that the strong early year sales have led to it revising its annual forecast, claiming now that sales this year will reach 1.92 million.
"April was another good month for the UK motor industry with private buyers responding positively, despite the end of the scrappage scheme.
However, there are still some difficult months ahead," Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, said.
The government's car scrappage scheme accounted for just eight per cent of sales last month.
