Travel Insurance: Ski and snowboard insurance 'vital'

Monday, 31 December 2007

Ensuring that a travel insurance policy is adequately extended to cover skiing or snowboarding is a vital aspect to planning a winter holiday, it has been claimed.

The Scotland on Sunday has warned those taking to the piste this winter need to be fully insured in case of accidents or theft.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance at price comparison site, told the newspaper that travel insurance does not just cover skiers in the case of a medical emergency.

"[Insurance] will protect you in the event of lost or damaged equipment, piste closure and personal liability; thereby avoiding a huge financial risk, both to yourself and potentially to other skiers," he explained.

Research by the site has found that 28 per cent of skiers are not insured for injuries to themselves or others on the slopes.

Market research firm Mintel has predicted that snowsports holidays will grow by 12,7 per cent between 2006 and 2012, reaching £820 million in value.
