Sounds of home hit favourites list

Monday, 03 September 2012

Certain pleasant sounds that home insurance holders will no doubt be familiar with from their homes recently came up as part of some research.

The Drayton Manor Theme Park study tracked down the favourite sounds of British people, using a 2,000-strong sample.

Many of them are the naturally occurring sounds of home, like the sound that rain makes when it hits a window (number two) or the laughter of a baby (number four).

Boiling kettles (46), the tick of a clock (41) and wine as it glugs from the bottle are among those that fall into the same category.

"We can often get so buried in our day-to-day lives that we don’t appreciate the little things in life, so it’s good to see that there are certain sounds we all enjoy," commented Drayton Manor's Helen Pawley.

"Many of the most popular noises aren’t just nice sounds in themselves, but evoke memories of good times or the anticipation of something good to come."

Though home improvements often involve people incorporating things they like of a visual nature into a house, the research could make people think about what sounds they might like to add to the mix!

They could, for example, pop on a CD of singing choir (number 20) or the music from a fair (36).

But we imagine they won't be playing ambient recordings of the likes of Ferrari engines (28) or frying bacon (15)!
