Motor insurance: Camera near Oxford 'is attacked'
Tuesday, 08 January 2008
Residents alerted the authorities after a speed camera was set on fire at a location near Oxford, it has been revealed.
An observer stated that the offender tried to cut at the camera's housing before creating the flames at Cumnor, reports the Oxford Mail.
Safer roads partnership spokesman at Thames Valley Police Dan Campsall said that the area is usually quiet when it comes to vandalism but that this may have been an angry individual.
He told the paper: "At this stage we wouldn't know if the person who damaged the camera had received a ticket and was disgruntled, or if it was someone who was just anti-speed cameras."
Mr Campsall added that the camera will be refurbished in time and that the police must ensure it is safe.
Motorists caught speeding could find that their motor insurance premiums are affected.
Earlier this week it was revealed that the council in Swindon may end its affiliation with Swindon Safety Camera Partnership after the possibility emerged that funds made from speed cameras may not be available from the government.
