Motor insurance: Call for speed cameras on Halifax road
Friday, 14 March 2008
There have been calls for speed cameras to be added to Boothtown Road in Halifax, following a study which discovered that over one in seven motorists were breaking speed limits in that area.
Figures from Calderdale council indicate that over 700 cars drive at 35 miles per hour on the road in a typical week, the Halifax Courier reports.
And an average of ten drivers per day get up to speeds of 40 miles per hour between 07:00 and 19:00 GMT, the data states.
Drivers who are caught speeding may find that their car insurance premiums are affected.
Councillor Megan Swift told the publication that the council has been told by the West Yorkshire Local Transport Partnership Working Party that the road does not meet requirements for providing speed cameras.
"But we believe there is a clear record of excessive traffic speeds and risk to the community," she said.
In November 2007, the Halifax Courier reported that a new speed camera was installed on Huddersfield Road in the town, a site of frequent collisions.
