Car insurance: Speed camera vigilante jailed

Thursday, 07 September 2006

A man who attempted to blow-up a speed camera has been sentenced to four months in jail.

Craig Moore from Doncaster, South Yorkshire admitted that he tried to destroy a speed camera because he feared that he had been caught speeding and would lose his driving licence.

Mr Moore was photographed breaking the speed limit by a road mounted camera in Hyde, Manchester and he then attempted to use thermite to destroy the evidence.

However, the £11,700 camera was left intact by Mr Moore's attack and even managed to take a photograph of his van moments before he attempted to destroy the device.

PC Mark Akers, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "Instead of just accepting that he had been caught travelling above the speed limit, Moore decided to blow the camera apart."

"He obviously thought that by destroying the main camera he was destroying all the evidence. But a combination of hard work and the latest technology led to his conviction," he added.

Drivers are reminded that if they are caught speeding and have points added to their driving licenses they must inform their car insurance provider.

However, such points do not automatically lead to an increase in motor insurance premiums and motorists are encouraged to use online car insurance quotes calculators to seek out the most competitive cover.
