Car insurance: Speed convictions halved in Staffs

Thursday, 29 October 2009

Speed cameras in Staffordshire are bringing in only half as many speeding convictions as they were two years ago, car insurance customers may be interested to know.

Since 2007 the number of tickets issued to speeding motorists caught on camera reduced from more than 7,000 to 3,500.

The news comes as Government statistics show that Staffordshire is officially the safest county in Britain, with just over three casualties per 100,000 miles – half the Derbyshire figure of just over six casualties per 100,000 miles.

Meanwhile, the number of casualties at camera locations remains low, with an average drop of more than 60 per cent compared to the pre-camera situation.

Cabinet member for highways Mike Maryon said speed cameras were "just a small part" of driving home the road safety message

“Those who claim they are there to make money are simply looking for an excuse for their dangerous driving," he said.

The news follows an announcement that new 'intelligent' speed cameras designed to blend into environment will soon be making their way onto the UK's roads to target speeding lorries.
