Speed could have a greater influence on car insurance claims in the future as the government intends to raise the limit on Britain's motorways to 80mph.

The planned change has been met by opposition from road safety groups and could be enforced by early 2013.

According to the Department for Transport, vehicles are now significantly safer than they were when the current speed limit was initially applied in 1965.

Since then, there has been a 75 per cent decline in the number of people killed on British roads.

Transport secretary Philip Hammond said: "While we must ensure that our roads remain among the safest in the world, we must also consider the huge economic benefits that can be created by shortening journey times."

Mr Hammond added that he wants the law to reflect the reality of modern vehicles, rather than those which were on the road when the law was originally enforced.
