Motor insurance: Speeding 'a cause of many accidents'

Wednesday, 05 March 2008

Speeding motorists caused almost half of accidents on Northamptonshire roads last year, according to a report.

In total 56 people died in road accidents in the county and speed was the cause of 13 of these, with it being a possible factor in 12 more, the Chronicle said.

Borough councillor John Yates singled out one accident blackspot on Boughton Green Road in Kingsthorpe, where student Ernest Ansah was killed in January this year.

He told the newspaper: "In the last two years at least three people have been killed [on one road I use].

"There are lots of factors, but I think the general factor is that it's speed that kills."

He said traffic calming measures would be welcome and the county council stated the authority would consider new priority roads for the next financial year.

Coventry resident Paul Brookes has called for the city council to introduce traffic calming measures on Allesley Old Road where six accidents have taken place within six months, according to Midland Newspapers.

Car insurance can be affected for drivers caught speeding.
