Car insurance: Speeding motorists to attend awareness course

Tuesday, 23 March 2010

Speeding motorists in North Yorkshire will be given a chance to avoid fines and court appearances if they are willing to take a lesson in safe driving.

A new North Yorkshire Police initiative will see drivers caught going just a few miles over the legal limit attending an awareness course to highlight how dangerous speeding is.

It is hoped that the courses, which are also run in other parts of the country, will help cut down on the number of accidents and car insurance claims caused by speeding.

Speaking to the York Press, councillor Keith Orrell, who sits on the North Yorkshire Police Authority, said: "These courses will be another way of alerting motorists to the dangers associated with inappropriate speeds and contribute to the continuous attempts to reduce road casualties."

The course will last four hours and cost the motorist £69. It is only available to people caught committing "low-level speeding violations" such as travelling 35 mph in a 30 mph zone.

Speeding motorists in Plymouth were recently pulled over by local schoolchildren in a bid to highlight the dangers of driving too fast.
