Motor insurance: Drivers are 'still speeding'

Thursday, 11 October 2007

Despite the rise in the number of speed cameras close to UK roads, a high proportion of drivers still have little regard for the legal limit, it has been claimed.

Research carried out by LeasePlan stated that three-quarters of motorists have broken the speed limit at some point, while almost half of respondents said they put their foot on the brake once they could see a camera, reports Motor Trader.

On top of this, two per cent of those polled claimed that they ignore speed cameras with the intention of never getting caught by the authorities.

Managing director of LeasePlan UK David Brennan said that many drivers must adopt a more careful approach.

"These figures draw attention to the significant number of drivers failing to take road safety issues seriously. Speed cameras are designed with safety in mind, but they don’t seem to be acting as enough of a deterrent to a section of the driving public," he commented to the paper.

Motorists who are snapped at high speeds by cameras may find that their motor insurance premiums are altered.

Recently, the Muswell Hill journal stated that a new speed camera has been installed in the area.
