Motor insurance: Prison for 172mph driver

Tuesday, 25 September 2007

A driver who was clocked at 172mph in a 70mph zone has received a ten-week prison sentence.

Timothy Brady, 33, was seen breaking the speed limit by traffic officers in a Porsche worth about £90,000, a speed which reporting paper the Oxford Mail notes is fast enough for a Boeing 737 to take off.

And safety experts cited by the publication believe that should Mr Brady have been forced to stop, it would have taken just over 450 metres. A crash at this speed and his motor insurance no-claims policy may have been the least of his worries.

Judge Morton Jack, in sentencing Mr Brady, said: "Your driving was criminally self-indulgent and utterly thoughtless of the danger you might be creating for the innocent."

Earlier this week the government unveiled new tougher penalties for drivers who refuse to state who was behind the wheel of a speeding car. Motorists will now have six points on their licence, which may lead to higher motor insurance premiums.
