Car insurance: Speeding fines to get cheaper

Thursday, 10 August 2006

Speeding fines could be reduced for some motorists caught breaking the speed limit on UK roads.

The government is considering reducing fines for fixed-penalty offences when motorists are caught just outside the limit. This could mean motorists having to pay £40 instead of the current £60. In addition, the amount of points added to driving licences would be reduced from three to two.

However, any motorists caught travelling significantly in excess of the legal speed limit could face fines of £100 and six penalty points on their licence.

A Department for Transport (DfT) spokesman explained: "This is in the current Road Safety Bill, which is going through Parliament. In it, we have the power to bring in a graduated penalty system."

Many car insurance providers require that they are informed if there are any changes to driving licences including the addition of penalty points. This can mean an increase in car insurance premiums but drivers are reminded to make sure they shop around for a motor insurance policy that offers adequate protection and good value for money.
