Motor insurance: Fines in Scotland 'decrease'

Thursday, 10 April 2008

The number of fines handed out to speeding drivers in Scotland has decreased recently, it has been revealed.

Speed cameras caught 114,107 drivers breaking the law in the country between 2006-07, making the Treasury £6.8 million, reports the Scotsman.

Overseer of the partnerships that look after the cameras, the Scottish Safety Camera Partnership, said that drivers are starting to respect the law more and this explains the drop in speeding-related fines.

Jim Dale from the organisation stated that this is the case but Bruce Young, Lothian and Borders co-ordinator at the Association of British Drivers, remarked that the figures prove motorists simply now know where the cameras are placed.

"Drivers are increasingly aware of both fixed and mobile camera locations," he told the publication.

In related news, an enquiry has recently been started by police in Kent after reports about the misuse of a mobile speed camera there, something that has led to a drop in fines there.

Motorists caught speeding may find that their motor insurance premiums are impacted upon.
