Car insurance: Motorists warned about unattended vehicles
Wednesday, 05 March 2008
Warming the car up on frosty mornings is leading to an increase in vehicles being stolen, police in Lancashire warn.
Thieves have targeted Fylde residents who leave their cars running unattended, Lancashire Constabulary told the Lytham St Anne's Express.
Last year many motorists had their vehicles stolen in this way and car insurance companies tend to take a dim view of situations where driver has left the car unattended with the keys inside.
Detective sergeant Simon Ingham told the newspaper: "It is really important people stay with their cars while they are defrosting as it is so easy for thieves to get away with vehicles which have been left unattended."
He added that criminals were aware people did this on cold mornings and went looking for opportunities, leaving drivers with invalid insurance policies.
Meanwhile Cumbria Constabulary has advised drivers to take their keys to bed at night to prevent thieves from hooking them off shelves and hall tables via the letterbox.
