Holidaymakers may be tempted to take out cheap travel insurance in a bid to save money however, the most economic policy may not be the most suitable.

Sean Tipton, spokesperson for ABTA - the Travel Association, said that when taking out travel insurance cover, Consumers need to take factors other than cost into account.

He stated that many cheap travel insurance policies only offer the minimum amount of protection and many will find that they will not stretch to cover many incidents.

"[Insurance] is especially important when we are dealing with recurrent ash clouds affecting travel," he added.

In order to secure the most adequate cover, holidaymakers need to ensure that they are forthcoming with all information which could be relevant, including details of any pre-existing medical conditions.

Failure to do so could render the cheap travel insurance policy void and leave Brits abroad exposed should they suffer an accident or worse.
