Motor insurance customers in Surrey have the highest risk of damaging their cars by driving over potholes, with the a new study showing that the county's roads are blighted by them.

According to the Kia Motors UK Pothole Survey, Surrey is the UK's pothole hotspot, with nearly 2,000 reported.

The figure dwarfs Hampshire's total of 892, which was the second-worst county inspected.

Kent, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire completed the top five, with 857, 855 and 796 respectively.

A major contributing factor to the deterioration of the roads was the recent cold snap which blighted the country recently.

It is bad news for car insurance customers, with previous research for Kia dealers revealing that damage to vehicles from potholes has increased by 150 per cent in some areas.

Suspension failure, damaged alloys and split tyres are the most common incidents car insurance customers see, with the average repair bill as high as GBP750.
