Car insurance: Parents 'can reduce their kids' chances of making a claim'

Monday, 17 November 2008

Parents who are keen to help their children avoid a car insurance claim can do a number of things to reduce their offspring's chances of being in an accident, it has been claimed.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), novice drivers - especially teenagers - are most at risk on the road during the first couple of months after qualifying.

Therefore, the group has suggested parents encourage their children to carry on going for lessons with a professional instructor even after passing their test.

It also advised mums and dads to travel in the car on routes kids are likely to follow on a regular basis, pointing out potential hazards.

Accompanying children in a variety of conditions - such as in poor visibility, at night and on rural roads - was highlighted as a good idea as well.

Last week, IAM claimed parents had an important role to play in changing perceptions among young male drivers who think they can get away with driving without motor insurance.
