Motor insurance: Driving lesson plans 'good news'

Thursday, 08 May 2008

Plans by the transport secretary to make it more difficult for motorists to pass driving tests have been welcomed by uSwitch.com.

Such a move could ultimately improve the safety of the roads for drivers, stated insurance expert at the company Ashton Berkhauer, in response to Ruth Kelly's proposals.

Cheaper motor insurance may become a possibility under the new scheme, he added, which might be an incentive for drivers who have seen the average charges for learning rocket to £1,337.

"The new test should improve the standard of new drivers on the road, reduce the number of accidents and subsequently lead to cheaper insurance - in addition to the discounts offered," he asserted.

He added that a large number of providers should fully get behind the scheme so that it is given a greater degree of legitimisation.

Ms Kelly stated this week that new drivers could have to pass four tests and take more lessons in different conditions.
