Car insurance: Speed cameras introduced on Cumbrian tourist route

Monday, 08 February 2010

The number of car insurance claims arising from accidents along a popular tourist route in the Lake District could be cut after speed cameras were installed in the area.

Cameras have been installed on a two-mile section Bassenthwaite Lake's westbound carriage after a number of drivers were found to be breaking the existing 50mph limit.

About 12,000 vehicles use the stretch of road each day, and between April 2004 and December 2008 there were 25 incidents on the road which resulted in injuries.

Phil Davies, Highways Agency project sponsor, said: "Accidents here are not only unacceptably high in terms of personal injuries but they also cause considerable disruption to travellers and local communities when they happen."
The fixed cameras are being sited between Keswick and Cockermouth.

Price comparison site Confused.com warned recently that having just two accidents could double the money a driver pays for their car insurance premiums.
