Toyota's reputation for reliability has taken a dent with car insurance customers, with sales in the UK falling by five per cent so far this year.

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders showed that the company's sales shrunk compared to the same period in 2009 when the country was in the grip of a recession.

The Japanese firm has had to recall nearly 190,000 cars in the UK after car insurance customers noticed several faults with their vehicles, including 'sticky' accelerator pedals.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the worst may not be over for the embattled manufacturer, which expects March to be the strongest month of the year for sales of its vehicles.

Toyota is not the only Japanese manufacturer to see sales nosedive, with rival Honda also reporting that sales of its vehicles are down 13 per cent this year compared with the first two months of 2009.
