More than 220,000 Toyota
car insurance drivers in the UK could have their car recalled by the Japanese car giant, which announced that nearly two million vehicles could have problems with their accelerators.
Models including the Corolla, AYGO and Yaris will be recalled in Europe, with similar moves seen in the US, where more than 2.3 million cars with faulty pedals were taken back.
Tadashi Arashima, chief executive of
Toyota Motor Europe, said the move was necessary to protect drivers' safety and that of other road users.
"We understand that the current situation is creating concerns and we deeply regret it," he added.
The firm is recalling eight models from its range covering manufacturing dates going back to February 2005.
A recent survey by Brake found that more than 42 per cent of British motorists drive with one or more dangerous defects on their vehicle, including damaged tyres, broken lights and faulty brakes.
