The number of car insurance holders on British roads has fallen during the first three months of the year, according to new figures.

Provisional data from the Department of Transport reveals that overall traffic levels were down by 2.1 per cent in January until March compared to same period last year.

The number of cars on the road suffered the biggest decline of three per cent, with heavy vehicle traffic sliding by two per cent.

Van traffic on the other hand rose by two per cent.

Experts claim the surge in the price of crude oil, which has filtered down to the forecourts, is a major factor in the decline in the number of car insurance holders on Britain's roads.

The figures also revealed that the average delay on the slowest ten per cent of journeys on England's motorways and A-roads fell to 3.65 minutes for the 12 months ending March 2010.
