Car insurance: Traffic lights sequence change mooted

Monday, 21 August 2006

Plans to consider changing the traffic light sequence on major roads has been met with mooted support.

A number of road safety groups have called for the standard three second amber phase to be longer to allow drivers to stop when travelling over 40mph especially as more traffic lights are installed on fast roads.

However, there are concerns that changing the length of the amber phase could lead to more accidents well as a number of red light violations if drivers are caught accidentally going through, especially if different roads have different phases. This could have an impact on car insurance costs for many drivers especially as extra licence points can push up premiums.

One solution could be to use a new sequence involving a green and amber signal to show drivers when to move off.

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign, explained: "We have long been concerned that 3 seconds of amber simply is not enough on faster roads. Fortunately we have found a complete solution and trials should start without delay."

He added: "It's a simple matter of a quick and complete solution to a genuine public safety issue."
