Travel insurance: Travel agents a dying breed
Tuesday, 14 November 2006
Travel agents are a dying breed, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).
High street travel agents are falling in popularity and ABTA predicts that this will continue for five years, but then the decline will peter out and stop because "there will always be a place for travel agents".
Shaun Tipton, chairman at ABTA, said: "Packaged holidays are declining in popularity.
"To be fair, the high point of the travel agents which were in the late 80s was unsustainable. There are half the number of travel agents now as there were then. There were too many companies chasing too small a market."
He also pointed out that in the US, travel agents' business has picked up because consumers have not been able to find good deals when browsing the internet and prefer the help and advice which a professional can offer.
When browsing the net for your next holiday, take an extra five minutes to sort yourself out with some cheap travel insurance.
