The Icelandic ash cloud emerged in Europe and interrupted the travel plans of millions of
travel insurance customers throughout the continent last year.
As a result of the incident, it now seems that travel insurance providers have altered their policies to ensure that they are adequately prepared if a similar scenario occurs again.
A study from Airport Parking and Hotels indicates that many insurers now automatically include cover for incidents such as ash clouds, strikes, port or airport closures, flu pandemics and natural disasters.
This could be especially positive news for people who take out
cheap travel insurance this summer as strikes are planned in the UK.
For example, British Airways' cabin crew recently voted in favour of a strike after they could not come to a compromise in their long-running dispute with airline officials.
It is unknown when the action could take place, though comprehensive travel insurance may be imperative for many of those venturing abroad in the summer months.
